The bride tax is whatever portion of the bride's costs the guests absorb, divided among them. It isn't a fee the bride charges — it's what covering her share costs everyone else. Etiquette sites don't agree on how much of her trip she covers herself, so pick your group's arrangement below and see the real number.
By group size
The smaller the party, the more each guest pays for the bride
If she pays for none of her own trip, her share is split G/(N+1) among the guests who cover it — applied to The Knot's surveyed spend of $1,300 per attendee, $2,000 for those who flew.

Whole-home rentals come in fixed bedroom counts. An 11th guest often forces the whole group into the next tier up — and that cost lands on everyone's share, not just the newcomers'.

Las Vegas's +83.3% is an upper bound, not a typical quote — it's the average across a published tier that blends six-, seven- and eight-bedroom rentals. Treat the 20.5%–37.2% range in the other four cities as the typical effect.

- What is the bride tax?
- Whatever portion of the bride's costs the guests absorb, divided among them. It isn't a fee the bride charges — it's what covering her share costs everyone else. For any group cost the guests carry on her behalf, each of N guests pays exactly 1/N more than they would if she paid it herself.
- Does the bride usually pay for her own bachelorette party?
- The etiquette sites disagree. The Knot and WeddingWire have her paying her own travel and lodging while the group covers her meals and activities. Peerspace has the guests covering everything except her. That split is why this calculator has a field for it instead of one fixed answer.
- Why $28 in one place and $118 in another?
- They're two different assumptions, not two different measurements. $118 (at 10 guests) is what guests carry if the bride pays for nothing at all. $28 is what they carry if she covers her own flight and the group only absorbs her lodging and activities — the more common arrangement for destination weekends.
- Why does a bigger group sometimes cost more per person?
- Whole-home rentals come in fixed bedroom counts. An 11th guest can force the group from a five-bedroom house into a six-bedroom (or larger) one, and that jump lands on everyone's share — not just the extra guest's. Across four of our five cities, going from 8 to 10 guests raises the per-guest lodging cost 20.5% to 37.2%.
- Where do these numbers come from?
- City figures are Rabbu short-term-rental market data (22,774 active listings, April 2026) and BTS domestic airfare data, combined with our own August 2026 pricing of bachelorette activities in five cities. Those are from-prices — the lowest published tariff for each product — so treat them as a floor and a relative ranking between cities rather than a typical ticket price. National figures are The Knot's Bachelorette Study, a survey of 500 attendees fielded July 2023. Full methodology and the underlying CSV are in the Bachelorette Party Cost Report.
- Why is the trip fixed at 3 nights?
- That's the scenario our cost model actually measured — a Friday-to-Monday weekend with two booked activities per person. We didn't price shorter or longer trips, so we don't offer a toggle that would just be guessing.
