What it is
South Congress is Austin's most photographed stretch of sidewalk, and this walk hits the murals that make it that way: "I Love You So Much" painted on the side of Jo's Coffee at 1300 S Congress Ave (the single most photographed wall in the city — expect a real line if you go later in the day), the "Greetings from Austin" postcard mural at 1720 S First St (Roadhouse Relics), and "Love From Austin" at 1912 S Congress Ave. If your group wants a fourth stop, "You're My Butter Half" is at 2000 E MLK Jr Blvd, over in East Austin rather than on the SoCo strip itself, so factor in a short drive or rideshare if you add it. It's entirely free, entirely outdoors, and the three core murals sit within easy walking distance of each other along SoCo's boutique strip, so you can wander between shops and photo stops without a fixed route.
Why it works for the group
This is the easiest high-impact photo op of the whole weekend — no booking, no cost, no waiting on staff to let you in somewhere. Coordinate outfits or just wear what you've got, line up in front of "I Love You So Much," and you've got the group shot that ends up as everyone's profile picture for the next year. Because South Congress is also full of boutiques and brunch spots, it's easy to build a whole morning around it: coffee, shopping, murals, repeat.
Go early — by mid-morning on a weekend, the popular walls (especially the Jo's Coffee mural) can have a real line of other groups waiting for their turn, since it's genuinely the most photographed wall in the city and everyone visiting Austin knows it.
Planning tips
When to go: Early morning, ideally before 10am on weekends, to avoid queuing behind other groups at the busiest wall — Jo's Coffee gets a real line by mid-morning, while the other murals rarely have much of a wait even later in the day.
What to budget: Free. Budget separately for coffee or brunch nearby if you're making a morning of it — Jo's Coffee itself is right there for a coffee stop before or after the photo.
Time to set aside: About 2 hours to walk between the three core murals, browse a couple of shops, and get photos without rushing. Add extra time (and transport) if you're detouring to the East Austin mural too.
