What it is
Congress Avenue Bridge holds the largest urban bat colony in North America — around 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats living underneath it. The best windows are March through early May and late July through mid-September; outside those stretches the colony is smaller or absent. Every night they pour out in a long, dense stream, and the whole event can run up to 45 minutes once it starts.
Timing isn't exact. The flight generally happens between 7:30pm and 9:45pm, roughly around sunset, but not always right at it — check a same-day bat-emergence estimate before you head over instead of just working off the sunset time. In cold or rainy weather, the bats sometimes skip the flight entirely, so build in a backup plan if the forecast looks bad. It costs nothing and there's no operator to deal with; you just show up and watch.
